Constructing A Haven for Canine Welfare

Phase 2 of Cusco Canine Rescue’s visionary project entails constructing a shelter to provide our canine residents with an environment that nurtures their happiness, health, and well-being. Acknowledging that some dogs may spend considerable time with us before finding their forever homes, we aim to create a sanctuary that fulfills their essential needs and promotes a joyful atmosphere. Here’s an overview of our strategic objectives for this critical phase:

  • Personalized Living Spaces: Our shelter’s design moves beyond traditional narrow runs and offers spacious, room-like areas to ensure each dog is free to move comfortably. Our canine residents will have access to 60-120 square feet of personal space, significantly enhancing their comfort and eliminating feelings of confinement.

  • Optimal Air Circulation and Ventilation: With an emphasis on the health of our dogs, we plan to circulate 100% outside air in animal spaces to minimize the risk of airborne diseases. Our collaboration with mechanical engineers will ensure a balance between maintaining quality air, energy conservation, and providing suitable ceiling heights for dogs.

  • Spaces for Play and Socialization: The shelter will feature indoor courtyards that provide a safe space for dogs to play and exercise, regardless of weather conditions. Additionally, our outdoor gardens and patios will offer opportunities for group play and socialization, complemented by ample shade for comfort during warmer climates.

  • Flexible and Varied Accommodations: Recognizing dogs’ diverse needs and behaviors, our shelter will offer a variety of animal spaces in differing shapes and sizes. This flexibility prevents dogs from becoming overly attached to a specific area and facilitates their transition to new homes.

  • Natural Light and Stimulation: To enhance our dogs’ mental well-being, our design incorporates ample natural light in the shelter. Natural light helps dogs distinguish between day and night and assists in sanitation through ultraviolet radiation, providing them with much-needed mental stimulation.

  • Enrichment and Entertainment: To keep our dogs engaged and mentally stimulated, the shelter will offer a variety of toys, treats, and interactive elements. Convenient systems like “mail slots” or “chutes” will allow staff and volunteers to dispense treats easily, and fixed toys on bungee cords will encourage play.

  • Comfort and Safety Measures: We prioritize creating a comfortable, safe, and clean environment for our dogs. Our design includes rooms with individual drains devoid of standing water, sharp corners, or toxic materials. In addition, our design strategy includes cozy resting areas, easy-to-clean bedding, and meticulous detailing for optimal sanitation.

  • Acoustic Control: Stress reduction is vital for our dogs, and to ensure this, we plan to implement measures to minimize noise levels within the shelter. Techniques include using glass windows and doors to isolate barking, employing laminated glass for improved acoustic value, and strategically placing vents to allow dogs to anticipate visitors, thereby reducing anxiety.

  • On-site Grooming Station: A vital part of our plan includes a grooming station. Upon admission and throughout their stay, dogs will have access to this station, ensuring their cleanliness and contributing to their overall health.

Phase 2 represents a monumental step in our mission to create a sanctuary for the street dogs of Pisac, where they can receive the care, comfort, and chance at a happier life they deserve. With your continued support, we look forward to realizing this vision.
